For over a decade and a half, the Spaceframe team have forged a robust and trusted partnership with the client and tenant, marked by numerous successful projects spanning across Australia. This 15-year partnership is a testament to the persistence and unwavering commitment to excellence by the extended project team, continuously embodying the company ethos of Better Everything.
Purpose built to service the growing local and export markets, the facility includes the first automated beef scribing system in Australia – powered by AI-driven robots to improve production accuracy, labour efficiency and safety.
The tenant is a certified ‘Carbon Neutral Organisation’ by Climate Active, one of the most rigorous certifications in the world, and the first and only red meat organisation to become carbon neutral as an organisation in Australia. For this to be maintained, greater attention and research needed to occur during the drafting stages to ensure the highest level of sustainability, and to ensure an environmentally friendly construction solution was delivered.
In collaboration with Scantec Refrigeration Technologies, this facility features a custom low-charge ammonia system, with a comprehensive construction of:• Five 16-cylinder compressors• 28 Glycol air coolers• Three trolley blast chillers• Specialised washdown system for a 27,000m³ room• Direct expansion (DX) freezer• And a dual-purpose ammonia DX Freezer/Chiller
Designed to serve a combined space of 67,000m³ across 28 rooms, this system showcases the best of efficient, sustainable, and reliable refrigeration technologies, driving operations and powering the industry’s future.
Boasting a refrigeration capacity of 250kW at -33°C/-10°C and an impressive 1200kW at -10°C/+35°C within a vast 67,000 m³ area supported by a 215m³/hr glycol flow, this system sets new standards and stands as a testament to a future where the pillars of refrigeration efficiency, reliability and sustainability are not merely aspirations but realities. A project specific highlight is the ammonia direct expansion (DX) freezer with in-rack blasts alongside a dual-purpose ammonia DX freezer/chiller.
The site’s proximity to a key intersection in the Sunshine Coast Industrial Park proved challenging at times coordinating site access during the construction period. In addition to this, the site’s position adjacent from an official core koala habitat area and Environmental Management and Conservation Zone, meant additional consideration towards local fauna protection initiatives. One such initiative was the creation and installation of a frog exclusion membrane along the entire common boundary – this was done to ensure any local wildlife stayed in the Racecourse Road Environment Reserve, and not inside the boundary of the meat processing plant.
Due to the combined expertise of the Spaceframe project team, the project was able to proceed in the safest way for the surrounding high impact businesses, local fauna and all involved in the project.
This was a full Design and Construct project for the Spaceframe team, undertaking everything from the services design (including structural, hydraulic, and mechanical services), through to complete turnkey construction and final handover.
